INTRODUCTION

Mechanical Engineering Department POLIMAS is led by a Head of Department and assisted by five head of programme.It is aimed to develop students’ employability skills to meet the needs of dynamic economy, which values innovation and productivity. Programmes include a global perspective that will enable graduates to make a valuable contribution to the wider society as it changes in response to regional and international competition and demand. POLIMAS programmes include a variety of Outcome-Based Education teaching approaches, adding value to POLIMAS teaching and learning that caters students’ needs in seeking for a quality polytechnic education and training. Mechanical Engineering Department offered five programmes:

 

1) DIPLOMA IN MECHANICAL ENGINEERING (PLASTIC)

SYNOPSIS

Diploma in Mechanical Engineering (Plastic) is designed to cover the current wide discipline of mechanical engineeringwith added specialization in the area of plastic. The broad-based mechanical engineering foundation courses which includesEngineering Mechanics, Electrical Technology, Engineering Drawing, Mechanical Workshop Practice 1, Workshop Technology,Computer Aided Design 1, Thermodynamics, Fluid Mechanics, Pneumatic & Hydraulics, Strength of Materials, Project,Plastic Technology, Machining Workshop Practice, Plastic Workshop Practice, Plastic Production Process,Product Design & CAE Modeling, Mould Design, Plastic Testing. Common core courses included in the programme are 
Engineering Mathematics, Entrepreneurship, Engineering Science and Occupational Health & Safety. Compulsory courses offered included Sains, Teknologi dan Kejuruteraan Dalam Islam, Komunikasi dan Penyiaran Islam, Pengajian Malaysia, Nilai Masyarakat Malaysia, Communicative English, Sukan, Kelab/Persatuan, Asas Unit Berunifom, and Unit Berunifom.

This programme provides the knowledge and skills in mechanical and plastic engineering field that can be applied to a broad range of careers in mechanical and plastic engineering. The knowledge and skills that the students acquire from the programme will enable them to participate in the job market as:

PROGRAMME EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES (PEO)

The Diploma in Mechanical Engineering (Plastic) programme shall produce semiprofessionals who are:

  1. competent in knowledge and skills in the field of mechanical and plastic engineering according to industry requirements;
  2. effective in communication and contribute effectively as a team member with the capability of being a leader;
  3. ethically and socially responsible towards developing the community and the nation;
  4. able to demonstrate entrepreneurship skills and recognize the need of lifelong learning for a successful career advancement and able to adapt themselves with new technological challenges in mechanical and plastic fields.

PROGRAMME LEARNING OUTCOMES (PLO)

Upon completion of the programme, graduates should be able to:

  1. apply knowledge of mathematics, science, engineering fundamentals and social science to well-defined mechanical engineering procedures and practices with specialisation in plastic;
  2. analyse well-defined mechanical engineering specializing in plastic problems with respect to operation and maintenance, including troubleshooting;
  3. conduct investigations and assist in the design of solutions for mechanical specializing in plastic engineering systems;
  4. apply appropriate techniques, resources, and engineering tools to well-defined mechanical specializing in plastic engineering activities, with an awareness of the limitations;
  5. demonstrate an awareness and consideration for societal, health, safety, legal and cultural issues and their consequent responsibilities;
  6. communicate effectively with the engineering community and society at large;
  7. function effectively as an individual and as a member in diverse technical teams;
  8. demonstrate an understanding of professional ethics, responsibilities and norms of engineering practices;
  9. demonstrate an awareness of management and entrepreneurship;
  10. demonstrate an understanding of the impact of engineering practices, taking into account the needs for sustainable development;
  11. recognise the needs for professional development and to engage in independent and lifelong learning

 

2) DIPLOMA IN MECHATRONIC ENGINEERING

SYNOPSIS

Diploma in Mechatronic Engineering at Polytechnic’s Ministry of Education Malaysia is designed to cover the current wide discipline of mechatronic engineering with added specialization subjects in the field of mechatronic engineering. Core courses offered include Engineering Drawing, Mechatronic Workshop Practice, C Programming, Electrical Technology, Thermofluid, Engineering Mechanics, Computer Aided Design, Electronic System, Strength of Materials, Industrial Electronics, Digital System, Programmable Logic Controller, Control System, Pneumatic & Hydraulics, Power Electronics, Project, Industrial Automation, Power Transmission Mechanism and Embedded System Application. Graduates are also required to complete one elective course at each semester 5 and 6 with a minimum total of four credits. Elective courses include Microprocessor, CADCAM, Industrial Robotics, Industrial Management, C++ Programming, Diagnosis & Troubleshooting for Mechanical Component, Tamadun Islam, Integrasi Malaysia and Computer Application. Common core courses included in the programme are Occupational Health & Safety, Engineering Mathematics, Engineering Science and Entrepreneurship. Compulsory courses offered include Sains Teknologi dan Kejuruteraan Dalam Islam, Komunikasi dan Penyiaran Islam, Pengajian Malaysia, Nilai Masyarakat Malaysia, Communicative English, Sukan, Kelab/Persatuan, Asas Unit Beruniform dan Unit Beruniform would provide students with interpersonal ability, attitude and professionalism towards their career.

3) DIPLOMA IN MECHANICAL ENGINEERING (PLANT)

 SYNOPSIS

Diploma in Mechanical Engineering (Plant) is designed to cover the current wide discipline of mechanical engineering with added specialisation in the area of plant. The broad-based mechanical engineering foundation courses which includes

Computer Application, Engineering Drawing, Computer Aided Design, Occupational Safety and Health and Mechanical Workshop provides versatility to the graduates, thus emphasizing the area of specialisation in mechanical and plant. The specialized courses include Plant Maintenances, Plant Engineering Practices, Power Plant Engineering, Plant Control System and Plant Service Drawing.

JOB PROSPECT

This programme provides the knowledge and skills in mechanical and plant engineering field that can be applied to a broad range of careers in mechanical and plant engineering. 4) DIPLOMA IN MECHANICAL ENGINEERING (MANUFACTURING)

SYNOPSIS

Diploma in Mechanical Engineering (Manufacturing) Programme is designed as a part of mechanical engineering discipline focusing in manufacturing field. The core discipline courses include Engineering Drawing, Computer Aided Design, and Electrical Technology enhances the student knowledge and capabilities. In order to enrich student manufacturing knowledge, the specialized courses such as Manufacturing System, Manufacturing Workshop Practice, Computer Aided Manufacturing Design, Industrial Robotics, Manufacturing Control,
Quality Control, Jigs, Fixtures & Tooling Design, Material Technology and Manufacturing Economy are introduced.
